NEW ROUND OF GST ADMINISTRATION REFORM

January 11th, 2010 tanner

The Rudd Government has taken another step in the reform of the administration of the Good and Services Tax (GST), with the Assistant Treasurer, Senator Nick Sherry, today releasing for public comment a second tranche of draft reform legislation.

“The Rudd Government is forging ahead with its plans to reform GST administration to make it simpler and less costly for business owners to meet their obligations,” the Assistant Treasurer said. “This draft legislation clarifies the GST law and ensures that it applies appropriately.”

Today’s draft legislation implements two further recommendations made by the Board of Taxation in its review of GST administration, namely:

  • clarifying that input tax credits can be taken into account in later tax periods; and
  • allowing GST adjustments for third party payments.

”I encourage anyone with an interest in improving the administration of the GST to look at the proposed legislation and provide their views,” the Assistant Treasurer said.

”The input of stakeholders plays a central role in designing law changes and the Rudd Government is committed to consulting before finalising the legislation.”

An earlier tranche of legislation was introduced to Parliament on 25 November 2009, following consultation on exposure draft legislation and exposure drafts for further measures will be released for consultation in coming months.

The draft legislation is available at www.treasury@gov.au  and consultation closes on Monday 18 January 2010.

TOURISM FUNDING BOOST FOR CAIRNS
9 December 2009

The Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, today announced a consortium of North Queensland tourism stakeholders have received a TQUAL Grant of $446,010 for an innovative project to develop the region’s tropical food attractions.

The project – led by Advance Cairns – will help diversify the region’s economy and deliver a regional food brand and a food consumer show, as well as extra marketing and promotion.

Minister Ferguson said: “Two million visitors arrive at Cairns airport every year, so developing North Queensland’s food tourism experience presents great opportunities to disperse visitors across Tropical North Queensland.

“It is expected that around 20 new food tourism operators will emerge as a result of this funding, which will drive economic growth and will be a catalyst for regional development.

“This funding will help the Cairns tourism industry be better positioned in a highly competitive market and give domestic and international travellers more reasons to travel in North Queensland.

“The Government is pleased to be investing in a more professional, innovative and competitive tourism industry.”
Tourism in Australia is a $40 billion industry which directly employs 497,000 people and generates almost 9% of Australia’s exports.

The other recipients of the Government’s $8.3 million TQUAL Grants program will be released in the near future.

What food products are in the region?

October 17th, 2009 tanner

Through this website I am constantly asked to source food products and would like to know what we have in the region that could be added to my database.

ducksRecently I was asked where Soursop could be purchased in both Brisbane and Melbourne as they had heard of its cancer fighting properties.  Chefs ask me for certain products (e.g. organic ducks and duck eggs) and it is great when I am able to link the two.

Do you have an interesting food product, or do you know anyone who does?   Please contact me or ask your neighbour/friend to contact me here .  There maybe business opportunities awaiting.

Banana skins to polish your shoes?

October 17th, 2009 tanner

shoe-shineBananas are not only tasty and healthy, but during hard times they can also have another function. The banana skin is apparently great for polishing shoes. By rubbing the inside of the skin over your shoes you get a nice glossy shine. The banana skin contains oil and potassium which also protects your shoes against wear and weathering. Just rub with the banana skin and then with a soft cloth, done!

October 11th, 2009 tanner

Visitors to Cairns Airport will get a typical taste of the tropics now Skybury Coffee has become the exclusive coffee served by HMSHost at its first new airport cafe in the redeveloped Cairns Airport Domestic Terminal.

General Manager of HMSHost, Stephen Hackshall, said the company had invited Skybury Coffee to tender for the coffee contract for the first cafe because the attributes of the Skybury brand suited the theme of a local poki online poker concept cafe.

“HMSHost wanted to offer a local themed cafe concept as part of the terminal redevelopment and for us there was no better choice than to partner with Australia’s premier coffee producer and leading global exporter.  We chose to serve Skybury coffee exclusively in the first of our new airport cafes, which is called Skybury Coffee and features themed visual branding of the Mareeba plantation,” said Mr Hackshall.

New rules for organic-labelled produce

October 11th, 2009 tanner

getrolleynelson

Standards Australian has introduced strict industry requirements for products labelled organic are genuinely organic.

The standard establishes an agreed set of procedures for the production, preparation, transportation, marketing and labelling of organic and biodynamic food products as well as textiles.

The development of the standard comes after an increase in unsubstantiated claims on labels and will make it easier to prosecute unscrupulous companies by clearly defining what qualifies as organic.

Mr John Tucker CEO of Standards Australia said consumers had led the demand for change in the multi-million dollar industry, which was now mainstream.
